"Karuna play with elegance of a chamber music trio, always mindful of textures and interaction,
yet they have all the wit and energy that is a part of the Finnish tradition, as well as the beautiful melancholy we've come to excpect from it."
Fiona Talkington, Songlines 125 / March 2017
ESKO JÄRVELÄ: nyckelharpa and violin
JUHA KUJANPÄÄ: piano
TEIJA NIKU: accordion
Karuna is a contemporary Finnish folk music trio with three keyboard players and unique sound.
The trio combines the sounds of Swedish national instrument nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle) and accordion with the rich harmonies of piano. They all compose for the trio, resulting in music which well represents each member’s personal style and different musical influences. One can hear both the dynamics of chamber music as well as the energy and rhythm of Nordic folk music in the ensemble.
Esko Järvelä and Teija Niku represent the new generation of Finnish professional folk musicians. Their skills are matched by Kujanpää’s rhythmic playing and jazz background, resulting in original music with many influences and harmonic twists. Karuna’s debut album “Hyvää matkaa” (“Bon Voyage”) was released in September 2010 by Ääniä Records.
